WHY BUCKSKIN?
BUCKSKIN (SMOKE TANNED) LEATHER AND FUR IS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS "TRADITONAL OR BRAIN TANNED".
HOWEVER, CONTRARY TO COMMON POPULAR MISCONCEPTION, IT IS THE SMOKE THAT DOES THE TANNING, WHILE BRAIN AND OTHER SOLUBILIZED OILS AND FATS ARE ONLY THE MEANS OF LUBRICATING THE COLLAGEN FIBRE MATRIX TO ALLOW THE RAW HIDE TO DRY TO A SOFT FLEXIBLE STATE WHILE CONTINUOUSLY STRETCHING IT UNTIL IT IS COMPLETELY DRY. BUT IF THE HIDE IS WET AGAIN AND LEFT TO DRY ON ITS OWN, THE NATURAL GLUES IN THE HIDE WILL SET UP AND IT WILL RETURN TO THE RIGID RAWHIDE STATE ONCE AGAIN. HOWEVER, ONCE SMOKED, IT IS PERMANENTLY CHANGED TO A COMPLETELY NEW PRODUCT THAT WILL NEVER EVER RETURN TO THE RAWHIDE STATE.
IT DATES BACK THOUSANDS OF YEARS, LIKELY TO THE "COATS OF SKINS" PROVIDED IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN!
BUCKSKIN IS A BEAUTIFULLY SOFT PRODUCT WITH UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS. IT IS VERY STRETCHY AND IT READILY
BOUNCES BACK TO ITS NATURAL LAY MAKING IT IDEAL FOR GARMENTS WHERE FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT IS REQUIRED! IT ALSO HAS SUPERB WEAR CAPABILITIES! BUCKSKIN CAN BE WASHED LIKE REGULAR FABRIC AND HUNG OUT ON A CLOTHES LINE TO DRY.
AFTER MULTIPLE WASHINGS, A SMALL AMOUNT OF SOLUBILIZED NON-PETROLEUM OIL ADDED IN THE RINSE CYCLE WILL SERVE TO REPLENISH THE NATURAL OILS AND ELEVATE ITS FABRIC SOFTNESS AND DURABILITY.
PRODUCT ORDERS CAN BE CUSTOMIZED TO ACCOMMODATE SOME VARIANCES IN OUR CUSTOMERS COLOR PREFERENCES BY USING DIFFERENT SMOKING MATERIALS AND LENGTH OF SMOKING TIME.
WE CAN ALSO ACCOMMODATE CUSTOMERS WHO WISH TO ELIMINATE THE MILD SMOKE SMELL
ASSOCIATED WITH BUCKSKIN PRODUCE THROUGH AN ADDITIONAL NATURAL PROCESS LEAVING
IT WITH A MILD "NATURE" SMELL.
SQUARE FOOTAGE RECORDED ON OUR SITE IS CURRENTLY ATTAINED USING AN OUTLINE OF A 2D PICTURE OF THE TANNED HIDE AND A COMPUTER PROGRAM. AS SUCH, IT IS NOT AN EXACT MEASUREMENT OF EACH HIDE AS NATURAL FOLDS WILL RENDER A MUCH GREATER SQUARE FOOTAGE AREA, WHEREBY GIVING OUR CUSTOMERS THE BONUS OF EXTRA MATERIAL AT NO EXTRA COST.
IN-STOCK ORDERS WILL BE FILLED ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVE BASIS. PRE-ORDERS WILL BE ACCEPTED ON "OUT OF STOCK" ITEMS, ON THE BASIS OF OUR ABILITY TO ACQUIRE THE RAW MATERIALS AND COMPLETE THE TANNING PROCESS WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME FRAME THAT SUITS OUR CUSTOMERS NEEDS.

OUR STORY
**As a young lad, with Native roots, growing up in a rural farm setting, I always had a passion for Mother Nature and what She could provide!
As such, Buckskin always had a special appeal to me. The beauty and practical application of Buckskin leather instilled in me an unquenchable desire to learn how to make it!
However, the art was highly protected and quality instructional information on precisely how to make it, was scarcely available!
Fast forward through almost 60 years of life, with internet technology and like-minded folks willing to share, here I am, living a lifelong dream!
It is such an awesome product that I can't help wanting to do my part to help others witness for themselves the inherent beauty of it and also help keep a fading tradition alive!
Without equipment to help achieve making it on a commercial scale, one would need a fearless mindset on hard work, and shear determination in the face of it to succeed, but on a smaller personal scale, is easily attainable by almost anyone, and it is SO worth it!
I've made hand and footwear out of commercially tanned leather in the past, but after working with Buckskin, there is no such thing as going back!
The softness and flexibility it has, easily surpasses chrome tanned leather at over twice the thickness, which to me, equates to superior longevity and a much greater return on my investment.
I sincerely hope I can accomplish my goal of instilling in the minds of people the desire for self-reliance skills that might help them move forward in a world that so desperately needs it and I believe that once exposed to all that Buckskin has to offer, others will carry the torch with the same pride and pleasure that I do!
Last, but by no means least, I love this planet that was created for our benefit and stewardship, and I want my active footprint to reflect my appreciation and contributing role in helping to restore and preserve Mother Nature the best possible way I can!
